Tools for Learning Schools… Teach about the impact of development: • Exhibit the building’s foot print as a one-story vs. a multi-story building. • Use the natural site as an environmental study lab. • Post math formulas/ illustrations showing how minimized impervious surfaces reduce water run-off. • Place exhibits on light poles showing how “light throw” is minimized. Teach about the impact of fossil fuels: • Clearly post areas of preferred parking for car-pools only. • Label regional building materials used to reduce transportation cost. Teach about reducing the use of potable water: • Use water collected from the roof for irrigation. • Use retention pond water for irrigation. • Use native shrubs and trees not requiring irrigation. • Post information in district restrooms about the choice of waterless/water efficient toilets, urinals, sinks and showers. Teach about energy efficiency: • Make energy efficient building systems visible and post diagrams of how they work • Include in posted information examples of the energy efficient design of the building envelope - roof, walls, windows • Use alternative/green power sources wind turbines, photovoltaic, etc. • Use day-lighting demonstrating the school’s reduced use of artificial light. • Install thermometers so students can monitor the advantages of light reflective materials that reduce heat islands. • Install energy management systems that monitor occupancy and daylight. Teach about Recycling: • Place attractive recycling stations for use throughout the school along with estimates of the resources and tipping fees saved by the recycling measures. • Demonstrate the importance of using recycled and reused products by clearly marking the source and the estimated savings. Teach about the wise use of materials: • Install and identify items made of renewable resources such as wheat board cabinets, bamboo gym floors. • Post product information on storage shelves in art rooms, science labs, etc. so that students/staff are aware of product content. • Post product information on storage shelves in custodial closets to inform staff of the importance of using toxin-free cleaning supplies, paints, sealants, etc. • Use local materials that tell a story such as limestone with fossils. Teach about planning: • Alert community members that the many shared uses of the school facilities reduces the number of facilities needed in the community. • Display the plan for the future for your facilities. • Post calculations that show how school bus use minimizes vehicular traffic and reduces pollution. Teach about healthy lifestyles: • Post mileage markers throughout the school for measuring distances when exercising. • Plan for and use outdoor classrooms. • Offer healthy food and drink in the cafeteria and in vending machines. • Display proper hand washing techniques in restrooms. |
